The Content was developed keeping the 'Whole Language Umbrella' in mind, both for the teachers and students based on Akshara's field learning through "Swalpa English Tumba Fun" Program. It was realized, spoken English should be emphasised along with Listening, Speaking and Writing as the teachers needed support in this area. Hence, tablets was provided with pre-loaded English Content which was tailor-made based on I standard Karnataka textbook for students. The competencies given for level I by DSERT, Karnataka, as well as the Position Paper on English as Second Language (NCF 2005) are the guiding principles for developing the content for the Tab. The modules in the Tab include 8 lessons from the English Text book and are introduced through conversation, rhymes, phonics, reading, writing and grammar. Each of these modules has an inbuilt assessment which is stored in the back end server as part of CCE.
There are 8 teacher modules given on the Tab for self activity and 16 two-hour face to face interactions with the teachers fortnightly. One hour would be spent on their capacity building, which is used to develop their proficiency in the English language. This will include L-S-R-W skills covering vocabulary, grammar, usage, rhymes, through activities; as well as professional development aspects. Modules have been designed to give Teachers, opportunities to speak in small group and do individual work, while an Akshara Resource person supported and gave positive feed-back. Teachers' progress was recorded both in the backend server and Resource Person field notes.
The preloaded content was tested in the field to establish its reliability and validity in two schools, namely Chennasandra GHPS and Subbaiyanapalya GHPS, before it was implemented in the sample clusters. We oriented the Hoskote Block and Hebbal Block. Thus Easy English was initiated and welcomed by the teachers and students wholeheartedly!
The picture below captures the orientation being conducted by Ms. Kanchan Banerjee, Managing Trustee, Akshara Foundation for the Hoskote Block and the session was presided by Mr. G Chandrashekar, Rtd DPI (Primary).
